Summary
[edit]DescriptionBodmann Avenue, Mount Auburn, Cincinnati, OH (27228884307).jpg | Mount Auburn was initially developed in the early 19th Century as a rural area, but became increasingly suburbanized and home to many wealthy families by the 1840s and 1850s, the era in which many of the neighborhood's exquisite Mansions were constructed in the Greek Revival and Italianate styles. The neighborhood remained a wealthy enclave into the early 20th Century, but as the city spread further out, many wealthy families departed for newer digs in Avondale, North Avondale, East Walnut Hills, Hyde Park, and Clifton, among other locales, and the neighborhood saw a massive amount of redevelopment as what was formerly large, multi-acre estates were subdivided and developed. These houses are examples of the types of styles that can be found throughout Mount Auburn, with most of these houses dating to the time period between 1910 and 1940, a time in which the neighborhood was at its peak of population, with a large middle-class and working-class population calling it home. In the decades following World War II, the neighborhood stagnated and went into decline as residents decided to settle in the suburbs instead, leaving it hollowed out. However, today, some areas of the neighborhood they left behind are seeing large amounts of activity as new urban dwellers settle in and renovate the old side-gable bungalows, temple front houses, duplexes, hipped roof bungalows, and gambrel-roof cottages that make up the majority of the neighborhood's housing stock. |
