Traditions and Culture from South Tirol, Italy.

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: This photo represents a Bodypainting made with the theme of "Showing the traditions and culture of South Tirol (Italy)". The model wears the combination of the traditional dresses. The word "Heimat" is very important for the people from South Tirol. Its like HOME. We have very strong roots and love our land- the nature, mountains, wine, good food. The grapes are symbolic for the good wine we have. The alpine herbs stand for the knowledge and application of it in the daily life of the south tyrolean. The religion (catholic) has also still quite a strong impact. For this reason I painted the famous church steeple in Graun. It is also a silent witness of an irresponsible sea damming shortly after the end of the Second World War. The burning heart is the symbol of the yearly "heart of Jesus celebration". This very popular religious ceremony is particularly important in South Tyrol and is connected to a strong patriotic feeling for the Fatherland. This tradition dates back to the XIX century, to the year 1796, when the leaders of Tyrol met in Bolzano to discuss how to push Napoleon’s invading troops out of the country. Sebastian Stöckl, abbot of Stams monastery in present-day Austria, suggested appealing to the Sacred Heart of Jesus to save South Tyrol from the hands of the French. Fires are lit every year on this day in remembrance of the event.
