Bone Villages in Lamu County

Description
English: The Boni are small and little known group located in Lamu county. At one time they were said to occupy the land between the Tana river and the Juba river in Somalia and Galla groups. The Boni are known as being hunters and gatherers and they were reputed to be proficient elephant hunters who supplied Ivory to the coast.

Some Bone were engaged in cultivation as early as the nineteenth century. The Bone belong to the Eastern Cushitic's language group, along with the somali and Rendille and they share certain cultural features and have close contacts with the Somali of the area. one source state that the name Boni derived from word bon which refers to free slaves of low caste who were often hunter not in possession of livestock.

The Bone live in a lowland forest environment, broken by glades of grassland or swamp.

Currently the Bone people have reached to Lamu Villages and some have occupied the Minazini area in Lamu town. The Boni people are Muslims and some are religious people who have become teachers of Islamic schools.
