Boy trying to reach the flag on the tip of a pole, in the summer festivity of Seville, La Velá de Triana..

Summary[edit]

Description
English: In the summer festival La Velá, celebrated in Seville (Spain) during the month of July in the neighborhood of Triana, La Cucaña is organized, a contest consisting of reaching a flag tied to the tip of a pole installed on a boat in the Gualdalquivir River. The pole is previously smeared with tar or some other substance that makes it slippery, making success in reaching the flag more difficult. Whoever manages to capture the flag gets a prize, either in money or in gastronomic products from the region, such as a leg of Serrano ham. If the flag is captured, it is replaced with another until the prizes run out. Generally it is the young boys of the neighborhood who swim to the boat to participate in the contest.
