| Description |
My picture shows the three bridges over the River Forth in Scotland. It was taken from 20 miles away and at 23,000 feet. It shows (left to right) the 1890 "Forth Bridge", a cantilever construction, which remains in daily use carrying train traffic. It's painted in the colour known as "Forth Bridge Red". The effect of atmosphere over a distance reduces the intensity of the red in this photo. The middle bridge is the Forth Road Bridge which came into use in 1964 and, until recently, carried a heavy load of traffic. Now it no longer takes cars. Cars now cross on the third bridge, the "Queensferry Crossing" which opened in 2017 - to take cars only. The 1.7 miles (2.7km) structure is the longest three-tower, cable-stayed bridge in the world and also by far the largest to feature cables which cross mid-span Zooming into the photo you can see Edinburgh Airport a little above the bridges, at the top centre of the picture. At bottom right is Rosyth Naval Base. Edinburgh is out of frame, off to the top left. As a consequence of the photo being taken from a long way away it has a strong blue atmospheric cast which cannot be completely eliminated. |
