| Description |
English: The overgrown remains and moat of Brimpsfield Castle, Gloucestershire, 7 September 2016. A wooden motte and bailey type castle was first built here soon after the 1066 Norman invasion. It was rebuilt in stone in the 12th/13th century but then the Castellan - John Giffard, 2nd Lord of Brimpsfield - rebelled against King Edward II and was executed in 1322. The King ordered the castle to be 'slighted' i.e. totally demolished, which it was. Before the first Norman castle was erected the site may have been occupied by the fort of a Saxon thane (nobleman). |
