Summary[edit]

Description

On the first shelf: characteristic instruments of the East, used in particular during religious services connected to the cults of the goddesses Cybele, Isis and also of the god Dionysus; pair of cymbals (1,2), formed by simple cuppelle connected by a chain, and sistri (3,4), in which the sound was procured by the shaking of the rods killed through the holes, positioned on the sides of the instruments.

On the second shelf: the syringe (5) has the barrels, placed in decreasing measure with the case decorated with the stylized depiction of rural temples, perhaps in memory of the god Pan, "inventor" of the instrument. The size of the object does not seem to allow its wind function and therefore it was believed that the vibration of the pipes could have been produced by air introduced with another system. Instead, the flutes (tibiae) (6,7) of bone, ivory, bronze and silver belong to the class of fistos.

The barrel perforated by a variable number of holes was rotated in the silver cases. The flutes often played in pairs produced a more similar to that of the oboe than of the modern flute.
