Summary[edit]

Description
English: The Discobole was created in plaster (see link below) end of 1822 by Mathieu Kessels (1784-1836), a neo-classical Belgian sculptor established in Rome since the autumn of 1818.

Later, a marble was commissioned by the 6th Duke of Devonshire (1790-1858). Signed and dated 1828, it was shipped to Chatsworth, UK, where it is on display.

Still later, bronze copies were cast by the Compagnie Anonyme des Bronzes, Molenbeek (Brussels, Belgium), namely :
- a first one, cast for and exhibited at the 1862 London Universal Exhibition, now stands in front of the Palais des Academies, Brussels (shown) ;
- a second one, cast in 1900, is now in front of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam ;
- a third one, cast in 1948, is still unpublished academically.
