Summary

[edit]
Description

Fossiliferous limestone from the Pennsylvanian of Ohio, USA. (~6.0 centimeters across at its widest)

The Lower Mercer Limestone is a Middle Pennsylvanian-aged, laterally persistent, marine fossiliferous limestone unit in the Pottsville Group of eastern Ohio, USA. It is richly fossiliferous, principally dominated by brachiopods and crinoid stems.

The elongated fossils on the right side of the rock seen here are bryozoans, also known as "moss animals". Bryozoans are colonial lophophorates, most of which make a calcareous skeleton. Many bryozoan skeletons have complex shapes that cannot be fully appreciated from the fossil record. Bryozoans are abundant fossils, especially in Paleozoic and Mesozoic limestones, but their skeletons usually get busted up during the storm events resulting in their final burial.

These bryozoans probably belong to the trepostome Tabulipora ohioensis.

Classification: Animalia, Lophophorata, Bryozoa

Stratigraphy: Lower Mercer Limestone, Pottsville Group, lower Atokan Stage, lower Middle Pennsylvanian
