Summary[edit]

Description
English: A chant from India

Buddhism, Hinduism

Background music is classical Indian

The chant is the following: (sources: 1. Georg Feuerstein; 2. Sanskrit Dictionary, Germany)

Pali:

Buddham saranam gacchami.
Dhammam saranam gacchami.
Sangham saranam gacchami.

Sanskrit:

Buddham śaraṇam gacchāmi. बुद्धं शरणं गच्छामि ।
Dharmam śaraṇam gacchāmi. धर्मं शरणं गच्छामि ।
Sangham śaraṇam gacchāmi. संघं शरणं गच्छामि ।।

Translation:

I go for refuge in knowledge,
I go for refuge in teachings,
I go for refuge in community.

Notes:

1. Buddham refers to Buddha (Pali), to knowledge/enlightenment/ability to reason/mind's power to discriminate (Sanskrit).

2. Teachings refer to Buddhist teachings (Pali), and Dharmic teachings (Sanskrit).

3. Sangham means the same in Pali and Sanskrit: community of like-minded spiritual beings.

4. This invocation, or refuge prayer, is known as the “Three Jewels” or “Three Treasures” (tri-ratna) prayer in Buddhism.

5. In Hinduism, this mantra chant is sometimes expanded with Satyam sharanam gacchâmi (I go for refuge in truth), Ahimsam sharanam gacchâmi (I go for refuge in non-violence), Yogam sharanam gacchâmi (I go for refuge in yoga), Ekam sharanam gacchâmi (I go for refuge in the One Universal life).
