Title
Buddhist Temple & grounds at Nikko
Description
This photograph is a view of the temple complex at Nikko, Japan, taken from the mountains which surround the city. Nikko is the burial place of Tokugawa Iemitsu and the founder of the Tokugawa Dynasty (1600-1868), Tokugawa Ieyasu. During the Meiji Era (1868-1912), the Iemitsu Mausoleum remained Buddhist while the Ieyasu Mausoleum was instituted by the new government as Shinto.
