Summary[edit]

Description
English: The commercial building at 1000-1004 Elmwood Avenue (corner Potomac Avenue) in Buffalo, New York, as seen in August 2022. Built in 1909 by construction contractor George N. Mead, this two-story brick structure is an example of a common architectural trope of the era, namely a Neoclassical aesthetic, simplified and austerely applied, that's adapted for small-scale commercial uses. The flat membrane roof projects from the exterior walls by way of a metal cornice undergirded by modillion blocks, with a modest parapet crowning the curved corner above the main entrance. Tripartite windows on the upper story are framed by stone sills and decorative masonry above in the form of flat arches with keystones. An assembly hall was an apparently unrealized element of the building's original design; instead, it has always housed a mix of stores and offices on the lower floor and apartments above: its earliest tenants included John Voss's grocery store and butchery, the dental offices of Dr. Joseph Cantwell, and the Edith Duncan Beauty Shop. By far the longest-tenured occupant was the Buffalo Trust Company, who (along with its corporate successors Marine Trust Company, Marine Midland, HSBC, and finally First Niagara) operated a bank branch out of the corner unit from 1923 until 2014. Breezy Burrito Bar and The Beer Keep hold down the fort today.
