Zentralbild-Sturm-Bräuer 9.5.1964 Gedenkstein für Fürst Poniatowski in Leipzig (DDR). Unser Bild zeigt den Gedenkstein für Józef Poniatowski, polnischer General und Marschall von Frankreich, in der Lessingstraße von Leipzig. Fürst Poniatowski befehligte im Dienste Napoleons das polnische Heer 1809 gegen Österreich und 1812 gegen Rußland. Er ertrank beim Rückzug nach der Leipziger Völkerschlacht 1813 in der Elster. Das Denkmal steht an der Stelle, wo er an der Spitze seiner Truppen die reißende Elster zu durchqueren versuchte, wobei er vom Pferd stürzte und ertrank. Heute ist der einstmals bei Hochwasser gefährliche Fluß aus städtebautechnischen Gründen in unterirdische Röhren verbannt. Fürst Poniatowski war als taperer Feldherr bekannt, und er lebt im Gedenken des polnischen Volkes weiter. Kaum ein Pole versäumt es, wenn er nach Leipzig kommt, am Gedenkstein Poniatowski Blumen niederzulegen. (Bräuer)
