For documentary purposes the German Federal Archive often retained the original image captions, which may be erroneous, biased, obsolete or politically extreme. Zentralbild-Deutsche Demokratische Republik-9.7.70-ro- Potsdamer Geschichten. Über das Nauener Tor (Foto) wissen alteingesessene Potsdamer eine lustige Geschichte zu erzählen. Sie stammt noch aus der Ziet des preußischen Königs Friedrich Wilhelm II. (Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts): Ob es zwischen dem Architekten und den Bauleuten über Schönheit und Zweck des Tores zu Unstimmigkeiten kam, ist nicht bekannt, wohl aber weiß man, daß der Bauherr seine Pläne nach französischem Maß berechnet hatte, die Maurer aber nach preußischen bauten. Als das Tor fertig war, stellte man entsetzt fest, daß es 27mal kleiner war, als der Plan es vorsah und nun einer mittleren Gartenpforte glich. Der Schaden wurde damals noch behoben, aber die Stadtväter Potsdams tragen sich schon seit langem mit dem Gedanken, das Nauener Tor abzureißen, denn noch heute verursacht es den einzigen Kreisverkehr der Stadt und gehört zu den Sorgenkindern der Verkehrspolizei.
