Summary[edit]

Description
English: "Bundestaler" by Jacob Stampfer. Designed in ca. 1546, this medal was very successful and was frequently recast over the later decades of the 16th century. This version is in silver, other specimens were struck in tin, and possibly also copper/brass.

It depicts the Rütlischwur, which is here dated to 1296 (as opposed to the date of 1307 that became standard based on Tschudi's Chronicle). The three Confederates (Eidgenossen) are named as Wilhelm Tell of Uri (in place of Walter Fürst), Stouffacher (i.e. Werner Stauffacher) of Schwyz and Erni (Arnold) of Unterwalden. This is informed by Etterlin's Chronicle of 1507, where Stauffacher is named without given name, the confederate of Uri is not named, and the one of Unterwalden is named der usz dem Melchthal von underwalden (without given name). The chronicle also has a similar illustration of the three confederates as armed men, shown in the act of recruiting a fourth man.

inscription:

+ WILHELM TELL VON VRE · STOVFFACHER VO(n) SCHWVVYTZ ERNI VO(n) VNDERWALD(en)
+ ANFANG · DESS PVNTZ · IM IAR · CHRISTI · 1296 ·

Monogram HIS [Hans Jakob Stampfer]

The presence of Stampfer's monogram suggests that this was still cast by Stampfer himself (active until c. 1566, died 1579). Reproductions of the late 16th century have a different monogram "T", and slight differences in the arrangement (the final word is spelled VNDERWALDEN, with the halberd head separating the word).
