CDのピックアップにみるビームスプリッタの利用例
偏光ビームスプリッタと1/4波長板とがレーザーからの光とCDからの反射光を分離するための重要な役割を果たしている。
偏光ビームスプリッタを透過した段階で、レーザー光は偏光している。これをコリメータレンズで平行光線にし、対物レンズでCDの反射層に焦点を結ばせる。この際1/4波長板を通るので、円偏光になっている。反射すると円偏光の回転方向が反転する。従って反射光が1/4波長板を通ると入射光と垂直の偏光面を持つことになる。これを偏光ビームスプリッタで分離し、光検出器に送る。
