Description
Nederlands: Foto. Fort Rotterdam had als kern een fort uit de tijd voor de verovering van Makassar door de VOC in 1667. Daarna hebben de veroveraars er een echte Nederlandse vesting van gemaakt, zoals de foto laat zien. Het fort, zoals de meeste forten in de Archipel strategisch aan zee gelegen, is er nog steeds. Het is niet zo lang geleden gerestaureerd en is nu een museum en cultureel centrum. In zijn Nederlandse vorm werd het fort door de inheemse bevolking wel benteng panyu genoemd, het schildpad fort, omdat het lijkt op een schildpad die uit zee kruipt. (P. Boomgaard, 2001).
