Nederlands: Negatief. De Billiton Maatschappij startte in 1860 de tinexploitatie op het eiland Billiton, voor de oostkust van Sumatra. Het eiland beschikte niet over goede wegen. Voor het transport van erts en andere goederen werd door de overwegend Chinese werklieden een kruiwagen gebruikt die men piepkar noemde, vanwege het jankend geluid van de ongesmeerde as. De kruiwagens werden via ijzeren kruirails, die sinds 1884 de mijnen verbonden met de hoofdplaatsen, voortgeduwd. Dit gaf een betere geleiding van het wiel dan de vaak modderige bodem. Rond 1920 was de piepkar aan het verdwijnen door de aanleg van goede wegen en smalspoorrails. (P. Boomgaard, 2001). Chinese kruiwagen, z.g. piepkar |
