English: A temprary smithy in Tifonis
Nederlands: Negatief. De Sultans van Ternate haalden hun zwaarden van de oostkust van Celebes. Hier lag het landschap Boengkoe of Tomboekoe. Een deel van de bevolking daar had zich gespecialiseerd in het maken van zwaarden, bijlen en dergelijke met als grondstof ijzererts dat in de buurt gevonden werd. Deze streek was tot 1907 onderhorig aan de Sultans van Ternate die zich jaarlijks enkele zwaarden en ijzeren staven als tribuut lieten leveren. De VOC gebruikte deze producten al in de 17e eeuw in de Molukken en op de Kleine Soenda Eilanden voor ruilhandel in de niet of nauwelijks gemonetariseerde gebieden. Beide streken (Molukken en Kleine Soenda Eilanden) kenden ook rondreizende ijzer- en goudsmeden (foto). (P. Boomgaard, 2001). Een tijdelijke smederij in Tifonis |
