Nederlands: Strijkinstrument (onderdeel). De termen rebab, rabab, en allerlei erop lijkende woorden, worden gebruikt voor een aantal chordofonen, met name luiten en lieren, in Noord-Afrika, het Midden-Oosten, Iran, Centraal-Azië, India en Zuidoost-Azië. Hij komt voor in regio's waar de islam zijn intrede deed. In Indonesië en Maleisië speelt de rebab een prominente rol in de volks- en klassieke tradities. De rebab daar is een spiesluit, met twee tot drie snaren, die bespeeld wordt met een strijkstok. Het onderscheid tussen de verschillende regionale soorten zit hem echter in de constructie, vorm en functie.
Zo is de rebab van Midden-Java meestal zo'n 100 cm. lang, terwijl die van West-Java tegen de 115 cm. zijn. Welke herkomst dit instrument heeft is niet bekend. Qua lengte zou West-Java kunnen, maar de Midden-javaanse rebab wordt vaak vergezeld van een rijk versierde standaard, en dat is hier ook het geval. In ieder geval is deze rebab Javaans. De rebab wordt vaak gebruikt in gamelan-ensembles, een of twee per orkest. De rebabspeler begint vaak met een korte introductiesolo. De primaire rol van het instrument is melodisch; hij blijft stil in luide muziekstukken (het is een "soft-ensemble" instrument; in Miller en Williams, 1998:641). .
