Nederlands: foto. Sumatra is bekend vanwege de fraaie huizen die er gevonden werden en nog steeds gevonden worden. Ze worden doorgaans aangeduid als traditionele of adat huizen. Ze zijn vaak groot, bedoeld voor meer dan één 'kern' gezin. Ze staan meestal op palen (waarvoor uiteenlopende verklaringen bestaan: bescherming tegen mensen en tijgers, muggen, houden van vee, status, hygiëne) en ze zijn bijna helemaal van hout met een dakbedekking van ijuk (vezel van de suikerpalm, te vergelijken met de daken van stro in Europa). Van alle etnische groepen van Sumatra (en vermoedelijk van de hele Archipel) hebben de Minangkabau hun adathuizen (daar rumah gedang [groot huis] genoemd) het meest in ere gehouden. (P.
