Description

FY2017 Conservation Stewardship Program (CStP) By Heidi Rients; Davison/Hanson NRCS District Conservationist The Conservation Stewardship Program (CStP) is the largest conservation program in the US with more than 500,000 acres currently enrolled in SD. Through CStP, agriculture producers earn payments for 5 years for actively managing, maintaining, and expanding conservation activities like cover crops, rotational grazing, crop rotation, wildlife management, and nutrient management-all while maintaining active agriculture production on their land. Starting in FY2017 the CStP program has made some significant changes to the program. Tools for the program have been redesigned to create a clearer and more logical process-from initial eligibility stewardship assessment to application ranking and payments. Applicants and NRCS staff will work together to identify resource concerns that are not currently being addressed and discuss alternative conservation activities that can be implemented. Enhancements will now be linked closely to conservation practice standards. The changes will improve coordination with conservation practices and the NRCS EQIP program. The NRCS invites all farmers/ranchers and all ag professionals to a producer workshop on Tuesday December 13, 2016 from 1:00-3:30 P.M. to help explain the program and the changes for FY2017. This workshop will go over the basics of the program, explain some of the crop and grassland enhancements, and offer attendees a chance to visit with their local NRCS District Conservationist (Hanson, Davison, Hutchinson, Aurora, and Douglas Counties) about the program and to sign up. The workshop will be held at the SD Regional Extension Center conference room located on the MTI (Nordby Trades Center building) campus in Mitchell. The sign up period for this program is until February 3, 2017 for FY2017. More information can be found our website at: www.nrcs.usda.gov/wps/portal/nrcs/main/sd/programs/financ....
