Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Calcrete in the Quaternary of South Australia.

Calcretes are an unusual type of paleosol (fossil soil). Modern soils and paleosols are highly variable in chemistry, appearance, and physical characteristics. Calcretes (also known as caliches and hardpans) are hard, calcium carbonate-rich crusts of pedogenic origin (some workers exclude the genetic portion of the definition). In this area, the calcretes cap Quaternary-aged loess deposits, or are directly atop structurally tilted, Cambrian-aged sedimentary rocks. South Australian calcretes are described and discussed in Dixon (1978).

Locality: roadside exposure along Old Sellicks Hill Road, south-southeast of the town of Sellicks Hill, northern Fleurieu Peninsula, southeastern South Australia
