English: Reconstructed skull based on that of the North American Camarasaurus, originally (and incorrectly) attributed to Apatosaurus excelsus, mounted in the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) in New York. This skull had been sculpted by Adam Hermann in 1905. It remained on exhibition at the end of the neck in this skeleton at the AMNH until some research actions were led by John McIntosh and David Berman of the Wesleyan University. In the 1970s, McIntosh came to the conclusion that the authentic skull of Apatosaurus corresponded to a specimen discovered in 1909 by an expedition set by the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. Following McKintosh instructions, the head of the Apatosaurus in the Peabody Museum was replaced with a cast of the Carnegie skull in 1981. Before the end of the 1980s decade, almost all other museums showing skeletons of Apatosaurus with sculpted skulls, or casts of Camarasaurus skulls, replaced their false Apatosaurus heads with casts of the now-admitted correct skull, preserved in the Carnegie Museum. The AMNH did not replace the Camarasaurus head in its Apatosaurus skeleton until the 1990s.
