Description

1 - Portrait bust of the Emperor Claudius


AD 41-54.


Chalcedony, light gray. Setting: silver, gilded, Vienna, 1st quarter 17th century.


Verifiably in imperial possession in the treasury since 1724. Taken over by the Museum in 1779.


At time of photo, the cameo was on loan to the Ara Pacis Museum in Rome for their Claudian exhibition.


2 - Augustus as Alexander-Zeus


30-20 BC.


Sardonyx, two-layered, white on brown. Modern version: gold ring, grooved, with serrated central ridge; Above articulated ball with granulation, above it a triangle as an eyelet, granulated in the gussets.


Verifiably in imperial possession in the treasury since 1724. Taken over by the Museum in 1779.


3 - Portrait bust of the Emperor Titus


AD 79-81.


Sardonyx, three-layer, brown, white, brown. Setting: medallion pendant with hinged lid. Gold, enamelled. French, 16th century.
