Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Most of us live on land, and it is easy to forget that more than 70 percent of the Earth's surface is covered by the Ocean. But at Cape Horn, the southernmost tip of the Tierra del Fuego Archipelago in Chile, the importance and the power of the ocean is evident. It was exceedingly difficult to find an image of this place that is not completely covered by clouds - the weather is typically stormy and overcast throughout the year. Rounding Cape Horn is still a major milestone in the life of any sailor or oceanographer. This image is a Highlight Optimized Natural Colour Composite of a Sentinel-3 image, taken on 10 February 2021. Sentinel-3 is the unsung brother of Sentinel-2, a satellite system with spatial resolutions starting at 300 meters (the image here is about 2000 km from East to West!), an optical swath width of 1200 km (Sentinel-2 has about 290 km swaths) and 21 spectral bands, optimized for ocean colour applications. If anything, these datasets will help you get the big picture (literally). Sentinel-3 has contributed significantly to our understanding of the global carbon cycle, which itself is very strongly influenced by ocean processes.
