Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The capped langur, belonging to the Cercopithecidae family, is a primate species indigenous to Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, and Myanmar. Inhabiting subtropical or tropical dry forests, this species faces a threat from habitat loss. Renowned for its arboreal and gregarious nature, the capped langur is characterized by a distinctive dark fur patch atop its head, resembling a cap. Their dorsal body side exhibits hues ranging from golden orange to yellow, complemented by a lengthy brown or grey tail. Marked by a black face, ears, and feet, these primates typically weigh between 10-14kg and stand 50-70cm tall.

Displaying predominantly arboreal behavior, capped langurs traverse the forest canopy for foraging, resting, feeding, and play. As a vocal species, they possess a diverse repertoire of calls. Diurnal in nature, they primarily consume leaves, emphasizing their folivorous diet. In their social structure, capped langurs form groups comprised of approximately seven females and one male. Notably, females often collaborate in caring for each other's offspring.

The capped langur thrives in lowland, wet, evergreen rainforests, and temperate forests. Although the largest population resides in Assam State, India, these primates have also been documented in other regions of northeastern India, such as Meghalaya State, and extend across borders into Bangladesh, Bhutan, and northwestern Myanmar.
