Opis vrste D.t. 24-28 cm. Gnezdeći areal obuhvata gotovo celu Evropu (osim krajnjeg severa kontinenta), širok pojas Centralne Azije, Bliskog Istoka, Male Azije i severozapadnu Afiku. Selica je. Zimuje u podsaharskoj Africi (uglavnom u istočnim i južnim delovima). Staništa su mu otvorene šume i mozaični tereni, naročito šumski proplanci i čistine (razređene ili degradirane borove šume, zasadi drveća, šumske progale i sl). Gnezda gradi na tlu. Hrani se krupnijim insektima koje tokom noći lovi u letu. U Srbiji je redovna gnezdarica, prisutna uglavnom u pobrđu i planinama. Gnezdeća populacija u Srbiji se procenjuje na 3.500 - 5.000 parova (Puzović et al 2009).
