Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Studio portrait of a standing man in nautical uniform, identified as captain Charles M. Scammon. Scammon was a New England sea captain who turned from hunting whales to studying and writing about them. He held a commission in the Revenue Cutter Service and was involved in the Russian-American Telegraph Expedition and in exploration of Alaska. This photograph appeared in a retrospective of distinguished contributors to the Overland Monthly and is probably much earlier than 1902, judging both by Scammon's age and the style of the photograph.
