Description |
The experts at Bruun Rasmussen apparently had a hard time with this painting. For some reason they decided that it was the British Royal Yacht visiting Copenhagen, presumably connected to the wedding of Princess Alexandra to The Prince of Wales in March 1863. But no, the Royal Yacht was a side-wheeler, and it picked up the princess at Antwerpen and did not go to the Baltic at the time. But in the last week of August 1862, a squadron of the Channel Fleet, commanded by rear-admiral Smart, stayed at Copenhagen. The black ship in the center is HMS Defence and other large vessels included the flagship HMS Revenge and HMS Trafalgar. The Danish King Frederik VII visited the ships on August 30, 1862. Extracts from The Times about the Channel Fleet. Danish newspaper Fædrelandet describing the arrival of the squadron (in Danish). |
