Español: El Carnaval de Negros y Blancos, es la fiesta más grande e importante del sur de Colombia, si bien su Indicación Geográfica le pertenece a la ciudad de San Juan de Pasto,[1] Colombia, también ha sido adoptada por otros municipios nariñenses y del suroccidente Colombiano. Se celebra del 28 de diciembre al 7 de enero de cada año y atrae un considerable número de turistas colombianos y extranjeros.
En septiembre 30 de 2009 fue declarado "Patrimonio Cultural Inmaterial de la Humanidad" por el comité de la UNESCO.[][cita requerida] señalan que en 1607 hubo una rebelión de esclavos en Remedios, Antioquia que causó pánico entre las autoridades. Este evento era recordado por la población negra de Popayán quien demandaba un día de descanso en el cual ellos pudieran ser verdaderamente libre. El rey de España concedió el día 5 de enero. Se dice que cuando se recibió la noticia, la población negra salió a las calles a bailar al ritmo de la música africana y empezaron a pintar de negro todas las paredes blancas de la ciudad. e las celebraciones más antiguas del continente.
