A female carpenter bee meets a milkweed bug on a milkweed cluster at Ulistac Natural Area, City of Santa Clara, CA. Note, too that this milkweed cluster is loaded with small yellow aphids, and the carpenter bee has honey-like goo on her feet. I wonder if this gooey stuff is from the aphids that she's been stepping on. Anyone have experience with this? Upated August 12: what looks like "goo" is actually pollen sacks called pollinia. (I shot many images of this bee as she moved from cluster to cluster.) Updated August 12: closer examination suggests that these whitish granules may be mites. They appear stuck to her instead of caught within her hairs. The map tool here incorrectly shows this location as San Jose, California, but it is inside the City of Santa Clara.
