This image was created from the blank world map available on Wikimedia Commons. It was created after a previous attempt to depict the countries involved in the Jyllands-Posten Muhammad cartoon controversy was deemed unfit. The more blue a country has, the more newspapers that printed the cartoons in that country. The more red a country has, the more major protests and boycotts a country had. Countries that are very red were home to at least one death due to the controversy. Countries appear purple because they have newspapers that printed the cartoons as well as major protests or boycotts.
I suppose it would be appropriate to say that I used a bit of my own opinion to determine what qualified as a "protest". I essentially used the major demonstrations mentioned throughout the timeline article as well as the List of newspapers that reprinted Jyllands-Posten's Muhammad cartoons article from the English Wikipedia. I also considered the boycotts against Danish products as a major protest as they were nationwide in some countries. As the timeline was my primary source of protest information, I didn't decide myself whether the sources of certain protests and demonstrations were the cartoons. In some countries, like Pakistan, where protests have been very common, the sources became irrelevant because they have already reached the highest degree of red. For the reprints, it didn't matter to me whether it was just one cartoon or twelve cartoons that were printing; I decided to ignore that aspect as it was literally impossible to include every detail one map. I would hope that the map would give a general overview of the situation and that the reader would look at the appropriate article to find out more information if he or she is looking for that.
