Summary

[edit]
Description

La Casa de la Lactància. Antoni de Falguera, 1913.

This institute, funded by the city of Barcelona, housed homeless children and had a maternal hospital where many women gave birth. To generate income, wet nurses breastfed foreign children for money.

Today the Breastfeeding House no longer cares for babies but has moved to the other end of our life cycle: it is a nursing home.

The blue ceramic façade is completely unique in Catalan modernisme. At the crown of the building, a sculptural relief portrays the wet nurse as a queen on her throne. The doors are adorned with Gothic style ornamentation.

Inside, the Art Nouveau stained glass, the skylight, the wrought-iron railings, and the ceramic fittings are in perfect condition. The excellent mosaic work is by Lluís Brú, who also worked on the Palau de la Música Catalana.
