Description

Plaque over the entrance to the Cashmere Caverns. It reads:

The C-II ring laser facility for measuring precise Earth rotation was formally opened on 17 October 1997 by the Hon. Maurice Williamson, New Zealand Minister of Research, Science and Technology, and Professor Dr. H. Seeger, President of Bundesamt für Kartographie und Geodäsie, Frankfurt, Germany, and on behalf of Forschungsgruppe Satellitengeodäsie, as part of the New Zealand - German Science and Technology programme. The instrument was built by Carl Zeiss, Germany and its installation was assisted by the Marsden Fund.
