« Symbole d'une déclaration de guerre, le casse-tête est présenté avec apparat au milieu d'une danse où chacun s'anime avec furie. Parfois le guerrier le laisse sur un lieu de bataille en guise de signature ou de provocation. Fabriqué avec du bois très dur, il prend généralement la forme d'un animal. Dans le cas présent, il figure une tête de serpent. Au contact des Européens, on lui substitue une petite hache de fer, puis le fusil de traite. »
