Summary

[edit]
Description The Sespir (Sixpir), here demonstrated to the SAAF Senior Command and Staff Course at Walmannsthal during the winter of 1987. The result of feedback from troops who lost a Casspir's front wheel on a landmine during a contact in the operational area, which resulted in them still being able to return fire but immobilised, was the addition of a second front axle. It steered along with the regular front wheels and was equipped with winch cables (visible in photo) to hoist either side of the axle clear off the ground in the event of the loss of a front wheel. The additional non-driven axle was fitted in front of the front drive axle, this to be sacrificed in the event of a landmine detonation. The theory was that the vehicle would remain mobile. The idea was shelved as one of numerous problems was simply a lack of power from the engine to push the undriven, undamaged axle along through bush and soft sand.
