Summary

[edit]
Description

The Castle Mountain Internment Camp, located in Banff National Park, Alberta, was the largest internment facility in the Canadian Rockies during World War 1, housing several hundred prisoners at any one time.

Established in July 1915, a total of 660 enemy aliens of Ukrainian, Austrian, Hungarian and German descent were interned at the facility during its entire operation.

Despite the internees' civilian status, a great many were used as military conscript labour on government work projects.

Of particular note was the use of forced labour in Canada's national parks, where the internees were introduced there as a matter of policy to improve existing facilities and increase accessibility by developing the park system's infrastructure.

Castle Camp was closed in August 1917.

In 2008, a settlement was reached by Canada with the Ukrainian Canadian community on the matter of acknowledgement and redress for World War I internment. An important part of the settlement was funding for educational purposes.

"Why?", a statue by Dutch sculptor John Boxtel of a Ukrainian Canadian internee circa 1916, was installed at the Castle Mountain internment camp site in Banff National Park in 1995, in memory of those imprisoned during Canada's national internment operations of 1914-1920.

The statue is entitled 'Why?' in three languages -- English, French, and Ukrainian.
