Description

The detail shows Saint Claudius. He was appointed Bishop of Besançon against his will in the 7th century. After seven years, he resigned from his post and returned to his monastery of Saint-Oyend de Joux. He is venerated as the protector of the poor and the weak. That is why Mehoffer shows the saint with a protective gesture. Claude lays his hand on the head of a little girl, while the girl grasps the bishop's hand. The two girls in the background symbolise the virtues of temperance and charity The inscription at knee height FECIT MIRABILIA IN VITA SUA (He worked miracles in his life.) identifies Saint Claude.

Mehoffer gave St. Claude the features of the ageing Pope Leo XIII, who had welcomed the establishment of a Catholic university in Fribourg.
