Summary[edit]

Description
English: View North through a stone arch which carries the Hart-Haswell Walkway over a farm track near Monk Hesleden, County Durham. Here the Walkway follows the route of the Hartlepool Dock & Railway Co. line over Hesleden Bank, originally a rope-worked incline, for which the original horseshoe-arch was constructed. The 1836 incline was replaced by more gently-graded single-track deviation lines (running either side of it) in 1874 to enable locomotive working. Contemporary maps suggest that the retaining walls either side of the entrance to this original arch provided the abutments for a newer bridge deck carrying the slightly lower up (eastbound) deviation line over the track.
