Steve LaVie, a senior emergency preparedness specialist who began his career with the NRC in 1997, receives his bachelor’s degree from Fitchburg University’s Vice President of Institutional Advancement Chris Hendry decades after he left school a few credits shy of graduation to serve in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. LaVie, who is retiring, was surprised by colleagues who contacted the university to determine if, in light of LaVie’s many accomplishments, the university would confer the degree. A celebration of his career and academic achievement was held at the NRC headquarters with attendance by the full Commission, LaVie’s family, and many colleagues.
