Summary[edit]

Description
English: Built in 1945-1950, this Modern building was designed by Erich Mendelsohn as his first commission in the United States, to serve the congregation of the B’nai Amoona Synagogue. The congregation moved to West Count in the western suburbs of St. Louis in 1986, after which the building went through adaptive reuse to house the Center of Contemporary Arts (COCA). The building features a stacked bond buff brick exterior, concrete trim, roofs of varying heights with clerestory windows, a tall main worship space with a curved roof, clerestory window with vertical fins, and a Jewish Star of David rendered in Aluminum on the side facade, geometric openings, aluminum ribbon windows, and a large contemporary addition on the east side of the building. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984, and continues to house the Center of Contemporary Arts (COCA).
