Summary[edit]

Description
English: The Centro Transit Hub, 559 South Salina Street, Syracuse, New York, April 2022. Built in 2012 after nearly two decades of planning, this $18.8 million bus depot occupies nearly a full block of downtown Syracuse on the site of what was once a surface parking lot and a pair of vacant low-rise commercial buildings. With a covered, climate-controlled waiting area, public washrooms and drinking fountains, round-the-clock security, digital screens that display arrival and departure times, and no fewer than 22 bays for buses to board and alight some 35,000 passengers a week, it came as a welcome replacement for the former transfer station at the corner of Fayette and Salina Streets in front of the Chase Tower, which had served as the central hub of Syracuse's public transit system since the stagecoach era, but had long since become outdated and crowded, with lines of buses and crowds of passengers clogging traffic at the dead center of town, occasional reports of aggressive panhandling, drug sales, and violence, and no shelter from the weather for waiting commuters in one of America's snowiest big cities. Syracuse's was the first of three such facilities to be built in the subsequent years by the Central New York Regional Transportation Authority, otherwise known as Centro, the public benefit corporation that operates mass transit in Onondaga, Oswego, Cayuga, and Oneida counties. New transit hubs in Utica and Rome would open for service in 2013 and 2020 respectively.
