Description

Châlons-en-Champagne (Marne)

Château du Marché.

L'édifice porte ce nom à cause de sa proximité de l'ancienne place du Marché au Blé.

A l'origine, il s'agissait d'un pont fortifié qui enjambait le Nau. Il faisait partie des remparts et protégeait l’entrée de la ville du côté des Jards (Les Jards sont des espaces verts).

Reconstruit en craie et brique au début du XVIIe siècle, sur l'ordre du vidame* de la ville Philippe de Thomassin, le château du Marché a ensuite été agrandi au XIXe siècle pour accueillir la Caisse d’Epargne.

La tourelle et les deux pavillons latéraux ont été ajoutés à la fin du XIXe siècle.

Au cours des années 1980, la caisse d'épargne fut remplacée par la Caisse des dépôts et consignations.

Il est occupé actuellement par le Syndicat Intercommunal d'Energies de la Marne.
