Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 1 m; Weight: 12-25 kg; Identification: The chacma baboon has gray-agouti, longer hair over its shoulders, and a bare patch of black skin over its hips. The chacma baboon's exact coat color varies by location. Its face is naked and black; Habitat: Savannas, rocky areas, woodlands; Diet: Omnivore: leaves, fruit, insects, small invertebrates, lizards, birds, young mammals; Reproduction: Breeding takes place throughout the year. The gestation period is 175-193 days long. The single young is weaned at eight months of age; Social Structure: Troops consist of 30-100 individuals. Daughters stay in their mother's troop and sons disperse; Behavior: A diurnal species, chacma baboons sleep among rocks or in trees at night; Status: No special status; Interesting Facts: One of the few predators of chacma baboons are chimpanzees.
