English: Description
This Hindu temple is constructed in honor of the Goddess Shakti or Durga, also known as Chamundeshwari, who represents power, and was held in importance by the Maharajas of Mysore. It is believed that it was here that Goddess Durga slew the demon king Mahishasura; symbolically representing the victory of good over evil. The underlying area is hilly and situated at an elevation of approximately 3300 feet (and is quite the climb as to say even though transport is available!). It has a mostly unexplored past, however, the original shrine is believed to have been built during the Hoysala dynasty in the 12th century. Later, the towering gateways (as shown in the picture) were completed by the hierarchy of emperors belonging to the Vijayanagar empire in the 17th century. The most iconic statue situated within these premises apart from the idols is the Nandi Bull which is the vehicle of Lord Shiva the destroyer. During festivals, fairs, and festivities, the bull is decorated with flowers and bells signifying respect and devotion to the animal. In dimensional aspects, the height of the statue is 15 feet high and stretches in the length of about 24 feet. For religious pilgrims, this site indicates one of the 18 ‘Shaktipeedas’ and is a must-visit for those worshipping the various forms of the goddess. The architectural style is consistent with the Dravidian (Southern Indian) style of Hindu architecture, and follows the Shilpa Shastra (Vedic principles of architecture), with the towering pillars or gateways which can be seen from miles away. Despite its similarity with other southern temples, the temple’s significance is duly to the state goddess of Karnataka locally called ‘Naada Devi’. The area itself is soothing to the eye and provides a valuable insight into the traditional Vedic and Ancient Indian treasure trove! Animals such as elephants and cows also blend in with the village or rural surroundings, and you are guaranteed to have a delightful time and most likely visit again and again! Interaction with the local shopkeepers and villagers will connect you to the past without having to use a time machine! You will definitely find some local handicrafts that suit your taste, which you can bring home to your loved ones! Are all these reasons not enough to persuade you from visiting here? |
