Français : Les chapiteaux jumelés du tour du chœur de
Saint-Martin des Champs, à Paris, dont la sculpture atteint à la hauteur d'un art complet. Certes, on retrouve bien là des éléments byzantins, mais non de cet art byzantin des monuments de Syrie. Cette sculpture rappellerait plutôt celle des dyptiques et des reliures d'ivoire, l'orfévrerie byzantine. Le sentiment de la composition est grand, clair, contenu. Dans des fragments déposés à l'église impériale de Saint-Denis, à Chartres, à l'église de Saint-Loup (Marne), dans quelques édifices du Beauvoisis, on retrouve ces mêmes qualités. Il n'est pas besoin de faire ressortir les différences qui distinguent cet art des arts romans du Midi et du Centre; ces derniers, quelle que soit la beauté de certains exemples, restent à l'état de tentatives, ne parviennent pas à se développer complétement... |
