Notes
  • The moiré fringing is an artefact of the scan, not the image.
  • The photograph is often reproduced as an image of Paul Gauguin's young vahine Teha'amana, the claim first made by Jean Loize (p. 24). However Danielsson notes Loize offers no evidence and that the photograph had appeared in other publications previously without being ascribed to Teha'amana (p. 342 n. 57). The other candidate for a photograph of Teha'amana is a photo attached to a page in Gauguin's original manuscript for his travelogue Noa Noa, but that bears no resemblance to his portrait of Teha'amana Merahi metua no Tehamana.
