Internal structure of Charon as described by Desch and Neveu (2017).

Summary[edit]

Description
English: This is a diagram of the internal structures of Charon, Pluto's companion, according to Desch and Neveu (2017). Charon is assumed to form from an impact between two equally sized, partially differentiated progenitors of the Plutonian system. The model finds that the present-day structure of Charon can be divided into a silicate core overlain by a solid ice mantle, which consists of water ice and a thin layer of ammonia dihydrate (ADH) at the core-mantle boundary. A crust of undifferentiated silicate and ice covers the mantle. Paper: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0019103516307904
