English: Roman church of Saint jean-Baptiste, Chassenon, Charente, France. Sculpture above the main door, representing a scene from the Passion : the Christ, crucified, is surrounded by two soldiers, one holding the spear and the other the sponge.
Français : Église romane Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Chassenon, Charente, France. Sculpture dans le granite au-dessus du portail d'entrée, scène de la Passion : le Christ en croix est encadré par deux soldats, l'un portant la lance, l'autre présentant l'éponge (voir Paul Ducourtieux, Rapport présenté à la Société archéologique et historique du Limousin - Excursion à Chassenon, 1er août 1889, p. 5). Celui portant la lance à flamme lozangique et ailerons est Longin, à droite ; celui portant l'éponge au bout d'une lance est Stéphaton, à gauche. Cette sculpture de Chassenon est la seule connue en France où ces deux personnages ont ces positions ; partout ailleurs dans ce pays, Longin est à gauche et Stéphaton à droite.
